Costantino Benedetti, MD received his medical degree from the University of
Rome, Italy, and did his anesthesiology residency at the University of Colorado,
Denver and the University of Washington, Seattle where he was also a National
Institute of Health Fellow in Pain Research and Therapy from 1976 to 1978. He
later assumed a faculty and clinical position with the University of Washington-Seattle
and became Medical Director of the Pain and Toxicity Service at the Fred Hutchinson
Cancer Center. In 1990, he was appointed the Director of Anesthesia and Analgesia
at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute at The Ohio State
University where he is a Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology.
Dr. Benedetti specializes in anesthesiology, cancer pain, and symptom control.
He is an active member of a number of professional associations, including the
American Pain Society and the American Academy of Pain Medicine. In 1972, he
participated at a meeting from which the International Association for the Study
of Pain and the journal Pain were established. He has been an active founding
member of that organization since that time. His work in pain research and therapy
has been published in many books, professional and scholarly journals. Dr. Benedetti
has organized 6 national and international meetings on acute, chronic and cancer
pain and edited 5 books in the field of pain. Since 1997 he has been on three
panels of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network .
Active in the community, Dr. Benedetti serves on the boards of several charitable
organizations, including the Franklin County Unit of the American Cancer Society
and
is currently President-Elect of the Ohio Division. In 1994 he founded the John
and Emma Bonica Pain and Symptom Relief Program, a community service named in
memory of the late John and Emma Bonica that assists patients with cancer pain
and symptom control who are economically disadvantaged. Dr. Benedetti was the
recipient of the Ohio Quality of Care Award 2000 for Outstanding Contributions
to the Columbus Community, as well as an Official Recognition by Bob Taft, Governor
of the State of Ohio for Integrity, Professionalism and Community Leadership.
