Walter R. Byrd, MD, currently is associate professor of psychiatry at West
Virginia University School of Medicine, where he also serves as the director
of residency training in psychiatry. He earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry
and mathematics at the University of Mississippi and received his doctor of
medicine degree from the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio,
Texas. He completed his residency in psychiatry and was chief resident in psychiatry
at the University of Texas Medical School in 1978.
Dr. Byrd has practiced psychiatry in several clinical settings throughout the
course of his career including US Army, several community mental health centers,
private practice, free-standing psychiatric inpatient facilities, and now at
the university level. He has been an active speaker and co-authored several
books over the years, with his primary focus of interest in two areas: 1) understanding
and communicating the role neurotransmitter systems play in behavior, and 2)
exploring the complimentary relationship that personal faith and medical practice
can enjoy in contemporary healthcare delivery.
