K.N. Roy Chengappa, MD, is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Mysore in India. His psychiatric training occurred in different countries beginning with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience in Bangalore, India, then at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and finally at Dalhousie University in Canada. He completed a two-year NIMH-sponsored fellowship at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh evaluating immunological dysfunction in subjects with schizophrenia before joining the faculty there. For the past decade, he has conducted clinical trials of the atypical antipsychotic agents in subjects with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. He directs the Special Studies Center at Mayview State Hospital, a collaborative venture between the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the University of Pittsburgh.

During the past five years, Dr. Chengappa has directed his efforts toward developing newer treatments for subjects with bipolar disorders through the Stanley Center for the Innovative Treatment of Bipolar Disorder also based at the University of Pittsburgh. He has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals, for which he is also a reviewer. Dr. Chengappa is closely involved with patients and their family members through their involvement in clinical studies, and involved in direct patient care, mentoring of psychiatric residents, and medical student education.
