William D. Chey, MD, is associate professor of medicine in the Division of
Gastroenterology at the University of Michigan. Dr. Chey also is director of
the Gastrointestinal (GI) Physiology Laboratory and Office of Clinical Research
at the University of Michigan Medical Center. He received his medical degree
and training in internal medicine at Emory University School of Medicine in
Atlanta, Georgia and completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University
of Michigan.
Dr. Chey recently served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Panel for the
latest educational campaign on the Functional Bowel Disorders offered by the
Digestive Health Initiative of the American Digestive Health Foundation. He
has also been invited to serve on the Clinical Study Design Committee of the
Rome III consensus guideline development conference. He has served as Chairman
of the Nominating Committee and the Program Development Committee of the Clinical
Practice Section for Digestive Diseases Week (2003-4). He currently serves as
a member of the Nominating Committee of the upper endoscopy (EGD) section of
the American Gastroenterological Association, the Informatics Committee of the
American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the Educational Affairs
Committee of the American College of Gastroenterology.
Dr. Chey has authored more than 50 manuscripts and 15 book chapters and serves
as a referee for numerous medical journals including ACP Journal Club, Alimentary
Pharmacology and Therapeutics, American Journal of Gastroenterology,
American Journal of Physiology, and Gastroenterology. He has served
on a number of abstract review committees dealing with H. pylori infection,
gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for
Digestive Diseases Week. He has been invited to participate as faculty in numerous
national and international continuing medical education (CME) programs in gastroenterology
and was elected to the roster of Best Doctors in 2001.
His research interests focus on the diagnosis and treatment of Helicobacter
pylori infection, peptic ulcer disease and the functional bowel disorders.
