Dr. Ed Coffey is a neuropsychiatrist and Vice President of Behavioral Health, as well as Chairman and Kathleen and Earl Ward Chair of Psychiatry, all at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. In addition, Dr. Coffey is a tenured Professor of Psychiatry and of Neurology at Case Western Reserve University, as well as Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Wayne State University.

Dr. Coffey received his undergraduate degree in Psychology (BS) from Wofford College (Phi Beta Kappa), Spartanburg, SC, and then spent two years at St. John's College, Oxford University, as a Rhodes Scholar (BA in Psychology, Philosophy, and Physiology). He received his medical degree from Duke University (AOA) in 1979, where he also completed his medical internship and residencies in neurology and in psychiatry. Dr. Coffey then spent six years at Duke as an Associate Professor of Psychiatry, an Associate of Medicine (Neurology), and Director of the Neuropsychiatry/Electroseizure Therapy Program. Prior to his appointment at Henry Ford Health System in 1996, Dr. Coffey was Professor of Psychiatry (Neuropsychiatry) and of Medicine (Neurology) at the Allegheny University of the Health Sciences, Allegheny Campus, where he served for five and one-half years as Clinical Director of the Allegheny Neuropsychiatric Institute and as Director of the Electroconvulsive Therapy Program.

Dr. Coffey is the author of over 130 scientific publications and book chapters, and is the editor of several textbooks, including The Clinical Science of ECT, The Handbook of ECT, Textbook of Geriatric Neuropsychiatry, and Textbook of Pediatric Neuropsychiatry. He is a member of numerous societies and currently serves as an Executive Director of the Association for Convulsive Therapy (ACT), as a Director (and Treasurer) of the American Neuropsychiatric Association (ANPA), and as a member of the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Committee on ECT and Other Electromagnetic Therapies. In addition, Dr. Coffey has been elected to the status of Fellow in the APA, the American Academy of Neurology, the ANPA, and the ACT. He is an Examiner in Psychiatry for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, is on the editorial board of several journals, and serves as an ad hoc grant reviewer for the National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Coffey is the recipient of numerous academic distinctions, honors, and awards, including the New Investigator Award in Neurosciences (American Geriatrics Society), a listing as "Top Doctor" by the Consumers' Guide to Top Doctors, and the 2003 APA Administrative Psychiatry Award.
