Jay D. Fawver, MD is clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the Indiana
University School of Medicine, and practices inpatient, outpatient, and consultation-liaison
psychiatry at Park Center Community Mental Health Center in Fort Wayne, Ind.
His patient population includes individuals suffering from psychotic disorders,
bipolar disorder, depressive disorders, and anxiety disorders. Dr. Fawver is
board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, with subspecialty
certification in geriatric psychiatry.
A pharmacist who graduated from Purdue University prior to beginning his medical
training, Dr. Fawver has been an advisor to several pharmaceutical companies
for more than 10 years and has assisted in developing drug research studies.
He was a 1998 recipient of the American Psychiatric Association Award for Excellence
in Medical Student Education. He also was presented the National Alliance for
the Mentally Ill’s Exemplary Psychiatrist Award in 2000.
Dr. Fawver lectures to psychiatrists and health care professionals, both nationally
and internationally, on the topics of psychosis, dementia, and mood disorders.
He was a presenter at the U.S. Psychiatric Congress in 2000 and 2001, as well
as at the Ireland Topics in Psychiatry Seminar and the American Psychiatric
Association Institute of Psychiatric Services in 2001. An advocate for the clubhouse
model of rehabilitation for the chronically mentally ill, Dr. Fawver is a board
member of the International Center for Clubhouse Development in New York City.
Additionally, he is a board member and advisor to the Fort Wayne Developmental
Center, which is a residential facility for individuals with mental retardation
and developmental disorders.
Since 1997, he has been the host and producer of Public Broadcasting System’s
“Matters of the Mind With Dr. Jay Fawver,” a weekly television
program addressing mental health topics.
