Sergio Fazio, MD, PhD is professor of medicine and pathology at Vanderbilt
University in Nashville, Tennessee. He also is the co-director of the Lipid
Clinic and Atherosclerosis Research Unit, and director of the Lipid Laboratory.
Dr. Fazio is a graduate of the medical school of the University of Rome, Italy,
and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine. Dr. Fazio also
earned a doctorate of philosophy in experimental medicine from the University
of Siena in Italy. After a clinical fellowship in metabolism at the University
of Rome, and a research fellowship at the Cardiovascular Research Institute,
University of California, San Francisco, he was promoted to instructor in medicine
at the University of California at San Francisco before joining the medical
faculty at Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Fazio has served on review panels for and received grants from both the
National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association, as well as
industry support for clinical trials. He also regularly serves as ad hoc reviewer
for many scientific publications and is an editorial board member for Arteriosclerosis,
Thrombosis, Vascular Biology, and The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology
and Metabolism. As author or co-author, Dr. Fazio’s work has been
published in many leading journals, including Science, Journal of Clinical
Investigation, Circulation, and Nature Medicine.
His current research interests include the pathogenesis of plasma lipoprotein
alterations and the mechanisms of early atherogenesis.
