Mitchell S. Finkel, MD, is Professor and Vice-Chairman for Research in the
Department of Medicine and Professor of Physiology and Pharmacology at West
Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown, West Virginia. He is also
staff cardiologist at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center of West Virginia
University in Morgantown and the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg,
West Virginia..
Dr. Finkel earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School
of Medicine in Baltimore before pursuing a residency in internal medicine at
the Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. He subsequently
served as a Medical Staff Fellow in the Clinical Center at the National Heart,
Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda,
Maryland. He then completed a cardiology fellowship at Yale University in New
Haven, Connecticut, before assuming a faculty position and Director of the Laboratory
of Molecular Cardiology at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Finkel has written more than 100 publications, including original papers,
invited reviews, book chapters, editorials and abstracts. His contributions
to clinical and basic cardiovascular medicine have been published in JAMA,
Science, Circulation, and the American Journal of Physiology,
among others. He is an NIH-funded independent investigator who serves on NIH
and AHA peer-review committees as well as the editorial board of the Journal
of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Finkel is a fellow of the American
College of Physicians, American College of Cardiology, and American Heart Association.
