Noel Gardner, MD is clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Utah
and chief of consultation-liaison psychiatry at Intermountain Health Care in
Salt Lake City, Utah. In this capacity, he directs teaching services that include
psychiatry, internal medicine, and family practice residents. Additionally,
Dr. Gardner regularly teaches in both the core medical school and the resident
curriculums for psychiatry, family practice, internal medicine, and neurology,
and has received several teaching awards.
Dr. Gardner obtained his medical degree from Loma Linda University in 1984.
Concurrent with his medical studies he also completed course work for a master’s
degree in biomedical ethics. He served a one-year rotating internship at Harbor
UCLA Medical Center in Torrence in 1985, and completed a residency in adult
psychiatry at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute in 1988. He was a recipient
of a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Fellowship, and for 13 years served
as chief of consultation services in the Department of Psychiatry at the University
of Utah.
A nationally recognized speaker, Dr. Gardner has numerous publications and
scientific presentations to his credit. His research and theoretical interests
include personality and personality disorders; the heuristic integration of
biological, psychological, and social theories of human behavior; and the role
of the humanities, particularly religion, philosophy, and ethics in medical
education and practice. He has been actively involved in directing clinical
trials of psychotropic medications and has particular interest in the clinical
and economic implications of psychotropic drug use in primary care settings.
