Elsa Giardina, MD, is Professor of Clinical Medicine for the College of Physicians
and Surgeons Columbia University, and the Director of the Center for Women's
Health, Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Giardina earned her medical
doctorate from New York Medical College, and completed her training as an internist,
cardiologist and clinical pharmacologist at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical
Center. Dr. Giardina is a certified diplomate of the American Board of Internal
Medicine and the Subspecialty Board of Cardiovascular Diseases and is a Fellow
of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology
and the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology (NASPE).
Dr. Giardina's many honors include the Jane V. Myers Memorial Medical Scholarship
from Bryn Mawr College, the Faculty Development Award in Clinical Pharmacology,
the Gender Equity Award, and the American Heart Association Appreciation Award
for community service. Dr. Giardina was also named to Who's Who in the East
and Who's Who of American Women. In 1996 she was awarded the "Award
of Excellence" by Governor George Pataki of New York State for her research
advancements on cardiac disease in women and for founding and developing a unique
multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary program in women's health at the Columbia-Presbyterian
Medical Center.
Dr. Giardina is recognized nationally as an expert on drug treatment of women
and has served on advisory committees of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
and the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI). She has conducted numerous
research investigations and has publishing over 200 articles, reviews and abstracts.
Current research and clinical interests encompass concerns about women participating
in clinical trials, cardioactive drugs, the biological effects of medications
and hormones on the heart, and the unique presentation and needs of women.
