William S. Gilmer, MD, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Drake University with a BA in biology and went on to attend the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He received his MD degree in 1986 and completed his internship and residency in psychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry, Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center.
He is currently serving as Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University Medical School and is Director of Clinical Trials for the Northwestern Behavioral Pharmacology Program. Since 1997, he has been Medical Director of the Clinical Program at Northwestern's Asher Center for the Study and Treatment of Depressive Disorders.
Dr. Gilmer has a research interest in the treatment and incidence of depressive disorders. He has been an investigator in 25 studies, serving as a principal investigator or principal site investigator in 14. He is Scientific Advisor and Co-Founder of the Northwestern Medical Campus Chapter of the Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association and an examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Gilmer has authored many journal articles and has lectured widely throughout North America. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and was inducted as a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in 2001.
