Sanjay Gupta, MD, received his doctorate in medicine at the University of Delhi,
India, in 1984. From 1987-1991 he served as a resident with the Department of
Psychiatry at the State University of New York (SUNY) Health Sciences Center
in Syracuse, and in 1994 completed an NIMH/PMRTP – sponsored postdoctoral
fellowship with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics’ Mental Health
Clinical Research Center in Iowa City, Iowa.
Dr. Gupta is currently Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Olean General
Hospital in Olean, New York. His academic appointments include a Clinical Associate
Professorship in the Department of Psychiatry at both the University of Buffalo,
New York, and the SUNY Health Sciences Center in Syracuse, and an adjunct faculty
membership at Daemen College in Amherst, New York.
In addition to his extensive teaching duties, Dr. Gupta is author and coauthor
of numerous articles, letters, abstracts, and book reviews, for such notable
medical journals as the American Journal of Psychiatry, Primary Care Companion
to the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, Annals of Clinical Psychiatry, and
International Journal of Geriatric Psychopharmacology, and of book
chapters. He has served as an ad hoc reviewer for the American Journal of
Psychiatry, Archives of General Psychiatry, Schizophrenia Research, and
the Journal of Affective Disorders, among others, and is on the editorial
boards of The Forensic Examiner and the Annals of Clinical Psychiatry.
Among Dr. Gupta’s current projects are the investigation of paroxetine
for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome; depression in schizophrenia;
elderly schizophrenics and bipolar patients in residential care; relapse rates
in patients on depot neuroleptics and substance abuse; and the continuing day
treatment project using rating scales.
