Byron J. Hoogwerf, MD is a staff physician in the Department of Endocrinology
at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, serves as director of the internal medicine
residency program, and is a member of the Preventive Cardiology Clinic staff.
Dr. Hoogwerf earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical
School, and completed his residency and endocrinology fellowship training at
the University of Minnesota and the Hennepin County Medical Center. He spent
four years on the faculty of the University of Minnesota before moving to the
Cleveland Clinic in 1985. He has academic appointments as professor of medicine
at the Cleveland Clinic Health Services Center of the Ohio State University
and as clinical professor of medicine at Penn State University.
Dr. Hoogwerf is past president of the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland
and is active with American Diabetes Association (ADA) including past membership
on the Minnesota and Ohio affiliate boards, the Professional Practice Committee,
has served as chair of the Council on Nutritional Sciences and Metabolism, and
a member of the 1994 Nutrition Guidelines Task Force and the 2002 Nutrition
Guidelines writing group. He was a member of the ADA national board from 1998-2001,
chair of the ADA Publications Policy Committee from 2000-2002 and a current
member of the Physician Recognition Committee.
He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, a member of The Endocrine
Society, a charter member of American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists,
and a fellow of the American College of Endocrinology.
Dr. Hoogwerf’s clinical and research interests are diabetes mellitus
and lipid disorders. He has more than 100 published articles and book chapters.
He has been actively involved in several large multi-center clinical trials
including the LRC-CPPT, DCCT (pilot phase), ETDRS, Post CABG, HOPE, HOPE-TOO,
ACCORD, DREAM and OnTARGET/TRANSCEND.
