Program Description: The CMHC treatment team plays a vital role in determining the goals and objectives appropriate during acute phases of treatment, as well as during long-term management of serious and persistent mental illness. The role of the treatment team in determining these priorities and guiding the selection of suitable pharmacological and behavioral treatment strategies is critical to a successful intervention and attainment of the established goals and objectives. Within this setting, the therapeutic alliance plays a critical role in optimizing patient care and establishing compliance. This program will address practical issues in the treatment and management of schizophrenia, giving emphasis to what treatment teams can do to manage persistent symptoms, reduce the risk of relapse, and optimize health and wellness so affected individuals can work toward achieving personal life goals.

Intended Audience: Primary care physicians, psychiatrists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, consultant pharmacists, pharmacists, psychologists, social workers, and case managers.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this activity, the participants should be able to:

  • Cite pharmacologic strategies for long-term management and relapse prevention.
  • Discuss recent data related to maintenance of response.
  • Identify psychosocial strategies and educational resources that can be used to increase adherence and reduce relapse.
